Section 3:  Montana to Pennsylvania


Thinking about a career in German translation?

Want to learn German language or German translation at university, or to study the science of translation itself?

If you’ve spent any time on my website you’ll realize that translation is a great profession, one that anyone with the necessary language skills and determination should consider.

This section of the German translation course directory lists universities and institutions in the USA (Montana to Pennsylvania) offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in German, German studies, German translation or translation studies.



Nebraska

University of Nebraska-Kearney

The Department of Modern Languages at UNK offers a Bachelor program in German:

  • German - BA
  • German in teaching - BA Ed.

New Jersey

Montclair State University

Montclair, New Jersey, 07043

The German program run by the Department of Modern Languages and Literature at Montclair offers a minor and major where you can learn German language itself.  Sadly it's centre for Translation and Interpreting doesn't cover German.

The German language program at Montclair runs an exchange program with Graz, Austria, giving students the opportunity to study in Austria for a whole academic year with a full scholarship. Students on the exchange report in detail about their experiences in Austria on the Montclair website.


Princeton

Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies, 319 Aaron Burr Hall, Princeton

The Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies runs a program in translation and intercultural communication (PTIC).  Expertise in German is a prerequisite for the course.

  • Translation and Intercultural Communication – Certificate of Proficiency

Though the program takes linguistic translation as its base and has a strong international flavour, it also encourages students to study other forms of discourse and seeks to foster lively debates among the sciences, humanities, and the arts.

Rutgers University

Department of Germanic, Russian, and East European Languages & Literatures

Although listed by the American Translators Association as an institution offering translation courses, I find only programs in which you can learn the German language itself:

• German studies – minor & major
• German – MA, MAT, PhD

They do offer a study abroad program to spend a semester or year at the Freie Universität in Berlin.


New York

City University of New York (CUNY), Hunter College

The Department of European Languages & Literatures  offers a German programm:

  • German – minor & major
  • Creative Writing and Literary Translation - MFA


New York University

German Department, 19 University Place, 3rd floor, New York, NY 10003

The NYU College of Arts and Science is another place to learn German - their programm includes:

  • German BA & MA
  • German Studies  MA & PhD

Students are also encouraged to learn German abroad, on a study semester or year in Berlin, Bonn or Vienna.


State University of New York (SUNY), Binghamton University

The Translation research and instruction program (TRIP), founded in 1971 and run by the Department of Comparative Literature to promote the study of translation at SUNY Binghamton, offers graduate and undergraduate programs.

There is no mention at all of whether German is covered or not, so you'll need to contact them for more details:

  • Translation Studies – BA Minor
  • Translation – graduate certificate
  • Translation Studies – PhD

The TRIP doctoral degree is the first PhD in Translation Studies in the U.S. It prepares students both for the professoriate and for scholarly research-including research-informed translation and offers individualized interdisciplinary tracks to accommodate a variety of backgrounds.

State University of New York (SUNY), at Albany

Although listed by the American Translators Association as an institution offering translation courses, I find only a single course on translation, plus a German minor:



University of Columbia

The Columbia University School of the Arts runs a series of Literary Translation at Columbia (LTAC) graduate courses as part of their MFA in writing and literary translation:

North Carolina

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

German – major and minor

Ohio

This seems to be the state to go to for German language enthusiasts!


Kent State University

Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies,  475 Janik Drive, Kent, Ohio 44242

The MCLS at Kent seems a great place to learn German - language and translation, and offers a comprehensive German program:

  • German - BA, MA & PhD
  • German Translation - BSc
  • Translation - MA (German to English)
  • Translation Studies - PhD

Their office of global education also organize exchange programs for students to study at the Technical University of Dresden or the University of Leipzig.


Ohio State University

Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures, Enarson Hall 154 W 12th Avenue
Columbus, Ohio 43210

The department claims to be home to “one of the oldest and largest German and Germanic Studies programs in the country” and is a Goethe Institute of Chicago examination center. It does offer a great range of fascinating German courses investigating German language and culture, and programs in:

• German - minor
• German culture & language - major
• German literature & language - major
• German – MA & PhD

For undergrads there's a German club, a summer study tour to Dresden, and a Study Abroad program in Bonn.

The department also offers  the chance to study abroad at institutions including the Humboldt Universität Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, and the Technische Universität Dresden.


Pennsylvania

La Salle University

School of Arts & Sciences, 1900 W. Olney Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19141

La Salle University offers undergraduate German language courses. Although listed by the American Translators Association as an institution offering translation courses, they seem to be only for Spanish:

  • German – major or minor

University of Pittsburgh

Department of German, Pittsburgh, PA 15260

Although listed by the American Translators Association as an institution offering translation courses, I find only programs to learn German language itself:

• German Studies – minor
• German – certificate (language proficiency)
• German – major
• German – Honours
• German Studies – PhD
• German & Film Studies - PhD

The department offers the chance to learn the German language abroad at the Universität Augsburg, and other institutions.
